The Quick & The Dead (2020)

Leather Boxing Gloves & Fountain Pen
27.87 x 41.74 cm
My father grew up with his hands shaped for fighting, but his mind shaped for something gentler.

Sent to boarding school at eight, a small boy in oversized gloves, he learned early that emotion was something to dodge, to parry, to swallow. His father expected grit; tenderness was never on the syllabus. So he hid in other worlds; classical music, slapstick comedy, the soft wit of Alan Bennett, small sanctuaries smuggled into a difficult childhood.

This work contains two children’s boxing gloves hung from a fountain pen, a quiet contradiction: the weapon he inherited suspended by the tool he chose. Writing became the way he stepped out of the ring, a place where he could speak without being struck. The Quick & The Dead is a tribute to that decision, to the boy who was taught to fight, and the man who chose instead to think, to imagine, to write himself free. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
